Learn the Skills that Schools Neglect
In today’s world, many people earn decent salaries but still face financial struggles in life due to a lack of financial knowledge. Without a proper understanding of personal finance and investing, they often make poor decisions that lead to long-term financial instability.
A major reason for this problem is that schools often fail to prioritize the teaching of essential personal finance and investment skills.

A key mission of Hoperation Fund is to bridge the gap between traditional education and the practical financial skills needed for lifelong success. We aim to provide the financial knowledge that schools often overlook, empowering individuals to make informed decisions and achieve long-term financial stability. Each academic year, Hoperation Fund hosts finance and investment lectures during its monthly meetings and organizes book clubs focused on discussing books related to personal finance and investing.
Finance and Investment Lecture (2024 - 2025 Academic Year, Online)
In the 2024-2025 academic year, the finance and investment lectures will cover key topics, including:
-
Concepts and Ideas of Long-Term Investment (the value investing and growth investing philosophies of renowned investors like Warren Buffett, Philip Fisher, and Peter Lynch)
-
Use of Stock Investment Tools and Charts
-
Main Asset Classes: stocks, bonds, commodities, real estate investment trusts (REITs), cash, and their characteristics and risks
-
Stock Market Indices, Major Sectors, and related index funds and sector funds
-
Business Cycle and Stock Market Cycles, the Merrill Clock, and sector investment strategies based on cycles
-
Classic Investment Portfolios, Portfolio Design, and metrics for evaluating portfolio and fund performance
The teaching goal for this content are twofold. First, students only need to spend about one hour per month managing their investments, ensuring it won't interfere with their studies. Second, through learning about investment, they will also gain insights into economic cycles, deepening their understanding of socio-economic issues.
Topics not covered in the lectures include any short-term speculative strategies, any leveraged strategies (such as margin or options), and any strategies that require daily monitoring of the market.
The design of this content partly draws from materials used in the investment reading club Olivia has led over the past two years, partly from study materials of high-school business competitions, and partly from resources used in some investment companies.
